Profile

The Master's program in Computer Science is distinguished by its small groups and a very good relationship between students and professors. The program is defined by interesting and practice-relevant topics that are studied at the scientific level. There are many possibilities for project and Master's theses.

The Master's program in Computer Science offers the possibility of deepening specific knowledge that has already been acquired in a core academic program in the area of application-oriented Computer Science. The academic program is focused on four subject groups:

  • Data science: methods and technologies of handling and processing today’s enormous data quantities in a meaningful way and extracting knowledge from it
  • Cyber-physical systems: knowledge of the interaction of hardware, software, and communication mechanisms to develop systems for industry 4.0 and the IoT
  • Software technologies: technologies and concepts for complex software systems, model-driven development, and distributed systems
  • Visualization and analysis: Mixed reality, i.e. the interaction between actual and virtual reality, advanced topics from computer graphics, pattern recognition, and image processing

Students have the possibility of obtaining an education specialized in a few topics or a more general education. The program teaches the current state of research in the selected subject areas and enables students to learn new subject areas and continue their education independently.

Research and Practice

In research, the Master's students can participate in ongoing research projects (e.g. on data mining in IT security, authentication with chip cards, or the Internet of Things). We have contacts and joint projects with many small and large businesses in Bavaria and beyond. There is also an intensive collaboration with the Fraunhofer application center for wireless sensor systems in Coburg.

Master's Concept

The Master's program is split into the compulsory modules of "IT management" and "Scientific methods of computer science.” The program also includes five compulsory elective modules that can be chosen freely from the different subject groups, a seminar for specialization in scientific work, two projects, and the Master's thesis.

In general, it is also possible to work in the regionally while studying, which would result in the program taking one or two semesters longer.

In the first two semesters, students are engaged in scientific modules, project work, and interdisciplinary modules. In the third semester, they write their Master's thesis.

Job Perspectives

Due to the rising demand in Germany, the currently more than 200 IT companies in Upper Franconia and many additional companies with their own IT specialists are having a comparatively difficult time finding qualified new employees. Accordingly, the interest of regional businesses in this academic program is high. More and better qualified specialists are necessary in order to ensure sustainable economic development that leads to the creation of new jobs over the long term. Graduates of the Master's program acquire comprehensive skills for working independently and coordinating complex projects with a high share of software. The Master's degree also enables them specifically to take on management responsibilities in businesses, enterprises, and public institutions. In addition, graduates of the Master's program are so familiar with independent scientific work that they can also do well in research and development in purely academic or research-related institutions.

Cooperative doctoral studies

Graduates with a good Master's degree can continue to work in academia after completing the Master’s program. They also have the opportunity to write their dissertation at Coburg University and get their Ph.D. in cooperation with a university.

Application and Admission Requirements

Admission requirements:

  • Diplom or Bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 2.5 or better (German grading system)
  • Fields of core program: computer science, business computer science, engineering computer science, or applied computer science
  • At least seven semesters (210 ECTS) including a required internship or six semesters (180 ECTS) without required internship, which needs to be made up by the time the Master’s thesis is registered.
