Profile

The area of specialization “automotive mechatronics” in the automotive technology program has a mainly technological orientation. The students acquire the basic knowledge that is needed today in automotive technology.  But not only the mechanical side plays an important role. Modern know-how in the areas of electronics and computer science are also taught. This is because automotive innovations today are mainly realized via software-based functions.

For this purpose, the area of specialization “automotive mechatronics” in the automotive technology program unifies several technological disciplines. This includes mechanics, electrical equipment, electronics, computer science, sensor systems, and actuators. But the academic program also does not skimp on business administration, project management, and presentation technologies.

Projects

The program is very practice- and project-oriented and thus designed specifically for the requirements of professional practice. The students apply their knowledge early on in academic and practical projects. They work in teams and so they can train their social skills.

Specific projects with industrial and institutional partners challenge students to present their work results confidently and establish early contacts in the practical world.

Practical Training

Basic internship

Until the start of the fifth semester, a basic internship lasting a total of 14 weeks must be absolved. It can be performed in smaller sections of at least four weeks and must fall on a period outside of the lecture period. It makes sense to complete part of this basic internship as a 6-week pre-internship before the start of the program. This would help reduce the work load in the first four semesters.

Required internship

The required internship usually takes place in the fifth semester of the program. It spans a contiguous period of 20 weeks. In addition, students will visit educational events to accompany their practical training.

Structure of the Program

The specialization program for "automotive mechatronics" in the automotive technology program teaches the following fundamental principles in the first four theoretical semesters:

  • Introduction to vehicle technology
  • Mechanics
  • Electrical engineering / electronics
  • Mechatronics
  • Computer science a. programming
  • Microcomputer technology
  • Mathematics
  • Simulation of mechatronic systems
  • Construction and machine elements
  • General business administration and project management

The second section of the program begins in semester 5 with a required internship spanning 20 weeks. In semester 6 and 7, the program can be mostly individualized by selecting various modules. The following emphasis areas are possible:

  • Combustion machines
  • Automotive electronics
  • Trends in automotive technology
  • Mechatronics in the power train
  • Sensor systems and actuators in vehicles

The independent Bachelor's thesis to be completed on location or in the industry is integrated into semester 7.

Curriculum and Examination Regulations

Job Perspectives

The automotive industry is a key industry of the German economy with great innovative power, international significance, and many career opportunities. Global automobile manufacturers and their suppliers are looking for well-trained mechatronics engineers. But other industry branches also need university graduates with a wide range of mechatronic, technological, and business know-how.

The graduates who specialized in "automotive mechatronics” in the “automotive technology” program work in areas ranging from the development of mechatronic components, engine, drive, and transmission technology to software-based functions, such as driver assistance systems in vehicles and their components, electronics, sensor systems, and actuator systems.

Master's degree

After completing the Bachelor’s degree, good graduates have the possibility of obtaining further qualifications with a Master's degree. Coburg University offers the following Master’s programs for this purpose:

These programs continue directly after the Bachelor’s degree.

Application and Admission Requirements

Here you can find all the important information about evaluating your school-leaving certificates and learning German in order to start a bachelor program at the University of Coburg.

Since the program is taught in German, you also have to prove your knowledge in German before the start of studies (level C1/C2).
