Profile

With the combination of scientific courses and practical experience, the Engineering Physics program provides you with skills and experience to develop new technologies and interdisciplinary engineering projects. Apart from profound basics in natural sciences, the students acquire practice-oriented skills from engineering and applied computer sciences.

In this versatile study program the students learn how to solve problems scientifically and thus are prepared to meet the needs of future development and advances in technology.

Structure of the Program

Semester 1 and 2 (in Coburg, teaching language: German)
During the first year, students will be provided with a fundamental knowledge in natural sciences like physics (optics, thermodynamics) and chemistry, mathematics and applied computer science. These topics are combined with classes in engineering like computer aided design, measurement and control technology as well as applied electronics. Supervised laboratory courses complete the lectures.

Semester 3 and 4 (abroad, teaching language: English)
The second year of the program takes place at one of our partner universities where classes are taught in English. Students will focus on Analog Circuits, Physics, Mathematics, Software Design, Signals and Systems there.

Semester 5 - 7 (in Coburg, teaching language: English or German)

  • Practical Internship of at least 20 weeks in industry or in a research institute according to the choice of the student, also possible abroad
  • Modules on practice related subjects
  • Electives
  • Study project
  • Bachelor seminar and bachelor thesis (in English or German, also possible at OTH Regensburg)

Specialties

The content of this bachelor program is similar to that of the German Bachelor's degree program in Technische Physik. However, Engineering physics will not only provide you with qualifications in the field of engineering but also with intercultural competences and language skills. In order to work successfully in internationally operating companies the students participate in language classes. Moreover, you will get practical experiences in laboratory courses. An internship and a bachelor thesis will bring you to the core of industrial research and development.

Partner Universities

USST Shanghai

Engineering Physics combines the specialties of two universities: Coburg University as a specialist in sensor technology with its Institute of Sensor and Actuator Technology and University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) with the College of Optical, Electrical and Computer Engineering as our partner at that time.

USST is a well-established and full-fledged multidisciplinary university committed to training competent professionals in the fields of Engineering, Management, Commerce, Arts, Sciences and Medicine. Additional information about USST and the College of Optical and Electric Information Engineering can be found on this website: www.usst.edu.cn

University of Twente

The University of Twente is a modern campus university in the Netherlands. The international study program “Advanced Technology” transfers theoretical knowledge into practice. The classes are taught in a personal and informal atmosphere on a project-based education. Moreover, the University of Twente has several excellent research institutes.

University of Winnipeg

The University of Winnipeg is located in the English-speaking part of Canada, Manitoba. You can look forward to mild summers, cold winters and a lot of opportunities for spare time activities. The study program you will attend there is physics. It is specialized in nuclear physics and works in close cooperation with the TRIUMF research institute in Vancouver.

More cooperations are planned.

Job Perspectives

Engineering physicists can be found everywhere, where physical phenomena can be implemented into innovative techniques. Because of the broad scientific education, Engineering Physics allows the graduates to work on technological innovations in the areas of industrial research and development. Areas might include autonomous driving, biophysics, renewable energy and medical physics.  Moreover, our graduates work in environmental measuring technologies and aerospace.

Our bachelor graduates can work in internationally operating companies in Germany or abroad. Students may continue their studies with a master degree in a variety of scientific and technical areas.

Admission Requirements

Here you can find all the important information about evaluating your school-leaving certificates and learning German in order to start a bachelor program at the University of Coburg.

Since the program is taught in German and English, you also have to prove your knowledge in German before the start of studies (level C1/C2).
